The
MHAS Control Tower Museum displays; show an operational airfield
spanning almost 50 years. Prior to the formation of the RAF
the airfield was operated by the "Royal Flying Corps".
Between
WW1 and WW2 it was the "Aeroplane & Armaments Experimental
Establishment" (A. & A.E.E.). During 1940 it was
part of 11 Group and took part in the "Battle of Britain".
In 1943 the USAAF 8th Airforce '356th Fighter Group' took
up residence alongside the RAF.
After
WW2 ended, RAF Martlesham Heath took part in 'Blind Landing
Experiments' and was home to the 'Bomb Ballistic Unit' testing
Atomic Bomb casings.
